I am a very curious person. I enjoy finding out new things in the world and gaining new perspectives on various matters. Back in school, whenever there is an opportunity to learn something new, I would definitely sign up for it haha! After all, it is always a good chance to discover new things and meet new friends!

I was inspired by Mrs Fabiola Soong to contribute to SMC. Through my involvement in the numerous activities, I have grown so much as a person, and in a way to be whom I am today. Over the last few years, I am very happy to see my juniors growing through their endeavours as well.

Problems faced in the industries these days are multidisciplinary. To deliver impactful solutions, you must understand your customers. To understand your customers, it is important to be able to understand different perspectives. In order to understand different perspectives, you will need exposure. So go out and grab every opportunity to be a part of something. Be it internship, volunteering or a research project – take part in it and cherish the opportunity. One day, what you learn can come in handy.

Over the four years of studies, I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with many bright minds from other countries and look at life from different perspectives. There were weekly guest lectures on topics such as climate change, energy security and even on the design of the Beijing National Stadium (designed for the 2008 Summer Olympics). At the end of these lectures, there was a small networking session where we had the opportunity to mingle with external guests. The EEE course in Imperial had a six-month placement programme where I worked in IBM UK. The workplace culture in UK was an eye-opening experience. During my placement, the work was less directed by my mentor and more initiative had to come from me. The experience has taught me that I can take the initiative to carve out how I can contribute back to my organisation!

I work with a team to deliver commercial and environmental intelligence for our customers. We do it by using Artificial Intelligence to process huge amounts of satellite images on a daily basis. One such example is the use of satellite-based maritime monitoring to detect illegal activities between vessels.

I would like to share about my experiences taking part in hackathons. I have learnt that even if the solutions that we have formulated may not be perfect, we still can thrive with our determination, persuasiveness and assertiveness. Being an engineer feels like taking part in hackathons, where I get a lot of opportunities to design solutions to fix problems with utmost perseverance and grit. Our solutions do fail, but we always learn something out of it and have a good laugh. This is what I enjoy.
